Root canal treatment under a microscope

When the nerve of a tooth is inflamed, the tooth can still be saved — the canals need to be cleaned and filled. Under a microscope the doctor sees every canal, so treatment is more precise and the tooth lasts longer.

When root canal treatment is needed

  • A tooth hurts badly, especially at night or from hot food.
  • It hurts to bite, or the gum is swollen.
  • The canals were treated before, but the tooth is bothering you again.

How it works

  • Examination and an X-ray to see the roots and canals.
  • Anaesthesia — treatment is painless.
  • Under the microscope the doctor finds and cleans every canal, including extra ones.
  • The canals are sealed, then the tooth is restored with a filling or a crown.

Complex cases

  • We retreat previously treated canals and remove broken instrument fragments from canals.

Frequently asked questions

Why a microscope?

Root canals are very thin. With magnification the doctor sees all of them and misses none — that is what decides whether the tooth survives.

How many visits are needed?

Usually one or two; more may be needed if there is inflammation at the root. The doctor will tell you after the X-ray.

Wouldn't it be easier to remove the tooth?

Your own tooth is almost always better. Root canal treatment lets you keep it for many years.
