Crowns and dental prosthetics

A crown restores the shape and chewing function of a badly damaged tooth and helps protect the remaining tooth tissue. A denture or bridge replaces one or several missing teeth. The prosthodontist chooses the restoration individually, taking into account the condition of the teeth and gums, the bite, your aesthetic wishes and the examination results. Options range from a single crown to restoring a full dental arch.

What we do

  • Zirconia crowns — strong restorations that can be matched to a natural shade and shape. The doctor chooses the specific material based on the tooth's position and the clinical situation.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and bridges — a proven option for restoring individual teeth or several missing teeth; usually more affordable than zirconia restorations.
  • Removable and clasp-retained dentures — used to replace several or all missing teeth when clinically indicated.
  • Implant-supported prosthetics — crowns or a denture are fixed on previously placed implants.

How the treatment works

  • Consultation and diagnostics: the doctor examines your mouth, orders X-rays if needed, discusses the options and draws up a preliminary treatment plan with the cost.
  • Tooth preparation: the doctor prepares (reshapes) the tooth and takes a digital scan or an impression.
  • Temporary restoration: if needed, a temporary crown or denture is fixed while the permanent one is being made.
  • Fitting and fixing: the doctor checks the shape, fit, bite and appearance, then fixes the permanent crown or denture.

Frequently asked questions

Which crown is better — zirconia or porcelain-fused-to-metal?

Both have their indications. Zirconia gives a natural look and is very strong. Porcelain-fused-to-metal is also strong and usually more affordable. The prosthodontist chooses the material based on the tooth's position, the bite, the condition of the tissues and the expected load.

How long does a crown last?

It depends on the condition of the tooth and gums, home hygiene, your bite and how regularly you come for check-ups. After the crown is fixed, the doctor will explain how to care for it and when to come for a follow-up.

Can I avoid grinding down neighbouring teeth?

In some cases a missing tooth can be restored with an implant and a crown, without grinding down the neighbouring teeth for a bridge. The doctor decides whether an implant is possible after an examination and diagnostics.
