When to take your child to the dentist

The first time is when the first tooth appears or before age one, even if nothing hurts. That way the doctor can spot early caries in time and show you how to care for the teeth, and the child gets used to the clinic calmly, without pain. Below: when to come, what happens at the first visit, how to prepare your child and when to see a doctor at once.

See a doctor at once, without waiting for a check-up, if:

  • Your child has toothache, cannot chew or wakes up at night in pain.
  • The cheek or gum is swollen, or a small pimple (abscess) has appeared on the gum.
  • There is swelling and a fever together — call us at once; if your child finds it hard to swallow or breathe, call 103 (ambulance).
  • Your child has hit a tooth: it is broken, loose or knocked out.

When to come

  • The first visit is when the first tooth comes through or before age one.
  • After that, a check-up about every six months. If caries is frequent, the doctor may suggest check-ups more often.
  • When the permanent chewing teeth start to come in, the doctor will check whether fissure sealing is needed — closing the grooves on the teeth where caries most often starts.
  • If the teeth are coming in crooked or the bite looks wrong, the doctor will tell you whether an orthodontist consultation is needed.

What happens at the first visit

  • Getting to know each other: the child sits in the chair and looks around the room; the doctor does not rush.
  • A check of the teeth and gums. If treatment is needed, the doctor explains the plan and the price before starting.
  • Advice for parents: how and with what to brush, how often to give sweets, what to do if a tooth hurts.
  • If the child is afraid and not ready to open their mouth, that is fine: sometimes one more visit is needed just to get acquainted.

How to prepare your child

  • Talk about the visit calmly: the doctor will look at and count the teeth.
  • Do not use the dentist as a threat and do not promise that "nothing will happen" — it is better to say the doctor will show and explain everything.
  • Choose a time when your child has slept well and is not hungry.
  • Bring a favourite toy — it helps the child feel calmer.

If treatment is needed

  • Baby teeth need treatment: a decayed baby tooth can harm the permanent tooth growing underneath.
  • If there is a lot of treatment or the child is very afraid, it can be done under sedation after a consultation and a check for contraindications.
  • What we do for children — see children's dentistry.

Care at home

  • Brush twice a day — in the morning and before bed — from the first tooth.
  • Parents help young children brush or finish brushing for them. The doctor will tell you how much toothpaste to use for your child's age.
  • It is better to give sweets with meals rather than as snacks throughout the day.

Frequently asked questions

At what age should a child first see a dentist?

When the first tooth appears or before age one — for a check-up, even if nothing is bothering them.

How often are check-ups needed?

Usually every six months. If caries is frequent, the doctor may suggest check-ups more often.

Do baby teeth need treatment if they fall out anyway?

Yes. A decayed baby tooth can harm the permanent tooth growing underneath, and it also hurts and keeps the child from eating and sleeping.

What if my child is afraid?

Our doctors work gently and without rushing, and the first visit is above all about getting acquainted. If there is a lot of treatment, it can be done under sedation after a consultation.

How much does the first visit cost?

The price of a paediatric dentist consultation is in the table above. If treatment is needed, the doctor will give you the plan and the final price after the examination.
